This past Monday we arrived very early at the Surgery Center! Purpose of the trip...Gabby's third set of ear tubes. Ugh...but they make such a huge difference that I am all for them. In the past Gabby has cooperated just great and made it through the whole procedure without incident. The first time Gabby had ear tubes she was 6 months old and was perfect. Slept a little while longer than usual. The second time Gabby was a year old and was a little bit more fussy than normal, drank about a gallon of Gatorade between the hospital and our house, but was just fine. However, this last time, to our surprise, was WAY different. After the surgery, when Gabby was "coming to" from the anesthesia, she seemed very uncomfortable. This freaked me out because she did so well the past two times. She was flailing her arms everywhere, screaming, yelling, crying...you name it she was doing it. Gabby was not fully awake or in her element one might say and was already saying things like, " I want to go bye bye" and "get me out of here", "I don't like it here". The nurse told us we were free to go about that time...good(I thought). We get in the car and begin our drive home. Gabby was asleep in her car seat and I was with her in the backseat keeping an eye on her. I noticed that she looked really pale and said something to Jeff and my mom about it. About that time Gabby coughed and started to vomit EVERYWHERE! Now I know this is normal sometimes with surgeries in general and anesthesia, but I guess I was so shocked that it happened because anesthesia had never had this type of effect on Gabby before. Also, just so everyone knows if you don't by now, Ford cars lock when you put the car into drive and the back doors do not unlock until the driver unlocks them. So, while their is vomit going everywhere, my mom cannot get into the backseat while we are parked on the side of the street...in Indy...downtown might I add...in morning rush hour traffic! Once we were settled, not less stressed, but settled and Gabby was getting her color back we continued on our way home. Oh yea...one more thing. Jeff had the nerve to ask if anyone was hungry and wanted to stop for breakfast! Are you kidding me!! We were home in less than 30 minutes and ready to take naps nonetheless! Grrrr...
I will end with a positive(because this is always what I was taught to do in meetings with child welfare :). I continue to believe that ear tubes are by far the best things ever invented. They have worked very well, knock on wood, for Gabby in the past. This past time our ENT inserted a "t" shaped tube into Gabby's ear that should last for 2-4 years. Yay! That in itself is worth the vomit and stress after surgery if you ask me!
